William J. Bridge, Associate Professor of Law at the Dedman School of Law, joined the SMU faculty in 1977. He earned both Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service and J.D. degrees from Georgetown University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Georgetown Law Journal. He has taught criminal law, evidence, professional responsibility and comparative law, among many other courses. Prior to SMU, he was assistant dean and adjunct professor at Georgetown. In 1976, he was awarded the Jervey Fellowship in Foreign Law from Columbia University. Fluent in French, Professor Bridge studied at the Faculties of Letters and of Law at the University of Caen, France, in 1970-1971, and at the French Court of Cassation, the French Council of State, and the French Center for Comparative Law in 1977-1978. At SMU, he has served as president of the Faculty Senate, advisor to the Barristers and OUTlaw, director of the Oxford Law Summer Program, and chair of numerous committees. He twice received the Dr. Don M. Smart Award for Excellence in Teaching at the School of Law, and was a 2017 recipient of SMU's Thomas W. Tunks Distinguished University Citizen Award. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Law.
